UITENHAGE, South Africa – Volkswagen Group SA is celebrating (Nov 2020) achieving a production total of four million vehicles since the plant opened way back in 1948 when the premises still belonged to South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SAMAD).
The first VW assembled – August 1951 – was a Beetle. Since then VWSA has manufactured a broad range of vehicles – among them Audis – as well as the iconic Beetle, and various models of the Transporter series – (Kombi), Golf, Jetta and Polo.

The plant currently manufactures the Polo for local and export markets as well as the Polo Vivo for SA. Through 2020 the plant has produced 75 521 Polos for export, as well as 12 804 Polos and 17 038 Polo Vivos for the South African market.

Bernd Schaberg, acting production director, told The Corner: “This production milestone is a proud moment for VWSA and proof of the dedication of the VWSA family.
“With this level of commitment I’m sure we can achieve many more milestones.”
