LONDON, England – The New Fiat 500 has received another award here in the UK, this time being named ‘Convertible of the Year’ and ‘Best Small electric car for the city’ by What Car? magazine in its 2021 Coty awards.
The jury praised the New 500’s handling, driving style, range, price and refreshed interiors and so conferred on it their ‘Convertible of the Year’ award. The car is also the first electric car to be named as such in the magazine’s history.
The New 500 is FCA’s first full-electric model has a number of top-of-the-range features: the 42kW battery guarantees extended range, up to 320km in the WLTP cycle, increasing to 450km in the urban cycle, and comes with an 85kW battery charger in both Passion and Icon versions.
It only takes five minutes to charge sufficiently to cover 50km – more than necessary for average daily use. The fast-charger can recharge the battery to 80% in 35 minutes and, its maker says, ”in terms of performance, the batteries are combined with an 87kW electric motor capable of 150km/h, 0-100km/h in nine seconds and an urban 0-50km/h in 3.1sec.
The New 500 also comes with driving assistants that are said to make it easier, safer, simpler, and more fun to drive. It also has Level 2 autonomous driving.
Luca Napolitano, head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia and Abarth brands, told The Corner in a media release: “We’re thrilled by this further acknowledgment for the New 500 so soon after it was launched.
”We’ve already sold more than 10 000 in Europe and so become No.1 in the Italian electric-vehicle market in December.”
Steve Huntingford, editor of ‘What Car?, said: “The New 500 is the first electric car to receive our ‘Convertible of the Year” award. If any car was created to be driven in the city, it’s the Fiat 500. Its shorter than its competitors, has ultra-light steering and wide front visibility, so is the most agile car for all city driving.
”Its range, an improvement on its competitors, is also suitable for any out-of-town journey.”
‘BEST DESIGN’ AWARD, TOO
The award has added to the New 500’s trophy shelves which already house ‘Green Car’ at the French Automobile Awards 2020 and ‘Car of the Year’ and ‘Best Small Electric Car’ from DrivingElectric, a specialist UK website.
The cars have also received the ‘Best Design 2020′ award from German’s ”Auto Motor und Sport’ and ‘Best Design Concept’ from the international Red Dot Design Awards.
