JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – SVI Engineering, a specialist manufacturer of armoured products, has created a cost-effective, anti-riot solution in the form of a converted single-cab Toyota Hilux bakkie.

The bakkie can carry eight people through hostile environments such as are being created along South Africa just about every day.

An already owned Hilux can be used if the customer wishes.

”THE anti-riot Hilux,” Toyota says, ”provides the security industry with a cost-effective option of seven passengers and a driver through areas where there is a high threat of being shot at and is intended for mining security, moving of guards, extracting people from a dangerous situation and controlling riot action.

”This was put to the test as a unit, part of the SVI Secure rental fleet, did duty during the week of unrest in South Africa and it passed with colours flying – a reliable alternative to large, older-generation, armoured personnel carriers.”

THE CABIN, Toyota explains, is protected by an SVI B6 Stopgun armour kit for glass, body and roof to resist 7.62mm calibre rifle rounds.

”A single kit,” the automaker told The Corner, takes four weeks to prepare before three weeks for installation. A suspension upgrade will be part of the cabin armour.

”The canopy is built of armoured steel providing B4+ ballistic protection against AK-47 rifle fire and will be bolted to the chassis with six seats, window gunports, an escape hatch, and aircon.”

Run-flat tyres can be added as an option.

AS THE vehicle can exceed the carrying capacity of the donor vehicle SVI homologates the Hilux to be safe for public road with braking, side-slope, and visibility tests at Gauteng’s Gerotek facility.

Toyota adds that the bakkies will exceed the criteria for a gross vehicle mass of 3499kg but can be driven with a standard driving licence.

The price, R223 000.00 (ex-VAT), will include Stopgun cabin armour and riot-control canopy from R271 000 (ex-VAT). A standard one-year SVI warranty of a year or 50 000km* will apply.

SVI was formed in 2004 as a mechanical engineering firm specialising in armoured vehicles and claims to be an African market leader in Africa with BEE Level 2 and its quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015 by TÜV Rheinland.
