AMG – FOR 55 YEARS those three letters have, worldwide, promised top-level performance, exclusivity, and superior driving dynamics. The G-Class has held a unique position in the AMG portfolio for more than two decades and is said to represent the pinnacle of off-road driving performance.

So, its claimed cult status makes it an ideal ambassador to ring in the 55th anniversary of the performance luxury brand with a Mercedes-AMG G 63 ‘Edition 55’ whose derail is said to underline Mercedes-AMG’s claim to offer the highest possible individuality and exclusivity.
It will be limited to 55 units and for sale only in the US and will to order later in 2022.

Philipp Schiemer, Mercedes’ management board chairman, told The Corner: “From a two-man start-up in 1967 to a state-of-the-art development site with its own engine plant for high-performance vehicles and more than 2000 employees in 2022, the success story of Mercedes-AMG through the past 55 years is simply impressive.

“The same applies to the G-Class, true to itself for more than four decades but also heading for an electric future and a perfect first well-wisher for our 55th anniversary. Our next 55 years will be as exciting and challenging as our founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher set themselves.”
Each Edition 55 will be finished in black metallic and have grey 22″ AMG forged cross-spoked wheel rims as well as an AMG ‘Night Package’. The fuel-filler cap will be silver-chromed.

The cabins will be black, with red elements. Stainless-steel sill trim with red-lit AMG lettering will welcome the driver. Black AMG velour mats will also have red stitching and 55 lettering. – as will the steering-wheel.
…AND A SHORT HISTORY LESSON
THE FIRST production AMG G-Class was launched globally in 1999 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the G55 AMG and with a 5.5-litre, non-turbo, eight-cylinder engine capable of 251kW. In 2004 the high-performance model received an even more powerful V8 supercharged engine with 350kW.
Another highlight was the 2015 introduction of the G65 AMG with its 463kW engine.
The current Mercedes-AMG G63, The Corner was told, will continue the success story with a hand-assembled four-litre AMG V8 biturbo capable of 430kW and with 40:60 ratio all-wheel drive and fast-shifting nine-speed auto transmission.
