Spirit of Amarok: Off-road challenge starts for SA title

• Spirit of Amarok 4X4 2022 championship starts April 22

• Farewell to the current generation VW Amarok.

• Next Amarok to arrive first quarter 2023

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The annual Spirit of Amarok 4X4 competition for non-professional precision driving will start today (April 22-June 27 2022) in Bloemfontein.

Mark Handley, head of VW Commercial Vehicles, brought The Corner up-to-date: “This championship has been run since 2011 – we’re proud of its popularity as an environment for our customers to experience the Amarok’s capabilities.”

560 teams (1120 people) from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana will tackle a 4×4 course designed by 11-times SA Rally champion and track-racing legend Sarel van der Merwe to test drivers and their bakkies with the winning team declared best driver/navigator duo in Southern Africa.

TOUGH COURSE TO TACKLE

The teams will be driving Amarok double-cab 3.0 TDI Extreme 4MOTION bakkies over various challenges that will test drivers’ and navigators’ skills – and, of course, show off the Amarok’s attributes in and over unforgiving of environments.

Here’s how it goes…

Speed challenges will be over a set course in the fastest time possible while avoiding obstacles such as poles. Points will be awarded based on elapsed time taken to complete the course. Technical stages will be measured over challenging off-road terrain such as sand or rock.

Teams will start each challenge with 100 points from which will be deducted faults such as touching a pole, reverses, or talking more than the time specified for the course.

The winner of the 2022 Spirit of Amarok competition will take home the coveted Wolf Trophy.

Handley told The Corner: “The 2022 competition will be a fitting farewell to the current Amarok range of which more than 40 000 units have been delivered since launch in South Africa in 2010.

“We will launch the second Amarok range in South Africa during the first quarter of 2023.”
