Toyota sales still riding high despite Durban floods

PROSPECTON, South Africa – Toyota SA has continued to top the vehicle sales charts into 2022 despite significant damage to its Prospecton plant which assembles Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Quest, and Corolla Cross on April 12, 2022.

The city was hit by serious, serious, rain and the plant was flooded with dozens of new vehicles  ruined.

TSAM registered 7439 sales (market share 18.1%) in June, including 5361 units in the passenger segment which made Toyota top in its category. The brand has sold 64 001 units since so far (end June 2022) and is leading the race with a 25.2% year-to-date share.


Reflecting on the new vehicle sales statistics for June 2022, Naamsa said the new-vehicle market’s performance was inspiring, considering ever-increasing challenging market conditions. Aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in June 2022, at 41 019, reflected an increase of 2888 units, or 7.6%, from the 38 131 vehicles sold in June 2021.

Export sales increased by 5044 units (18.0%) to 33 054 in June 2022 – 28 010 more than June 2021.

Leon Theron, senior vice-president for sales and Marketing at TSAM, told The Corner “Our sales performance till now proves that Toyota has an even firmer grip on its long-term position as the best-selling automotive brand in the country;

“It is. it is particularly astounding that TSAM remains on top despite cessation of production for popular vehicles such as Hilux, Hiace Ses’fikile, Corolla Quest, Corolla Cross and Fortuner,”
