Old Landys brought back to life for charity

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – A team of seven drivers in seven classic Land Rover models has departed on a 20 000km, three-month, adventure up Africa, across three continents and 20 countries.

The first leg of their argosy trip will be across Botswana before tackling the rest of the haul to Europe and on to the UK and the original home of Land Rover.

Each Land Rover has a unique background, long history, and its own personality. Winston, for example, is a 1967, short-wheelbase Series 2 found and restored by the event organisers and named for the late British wartime hero Sir Winston Churchill.

It will be delivered to his former home – Chartwell.

The main part of the AutObarn mission, however, is to put a spotlight on the critical needs of food and water in African communities.

It will be the first of five such missions which, it is hoped, will be completed by 2030 as part of the support for Africa and working with its youth. “Like all good things,” The Corner was told, “the idea was developed to include the heritage Land Rovers on the mission as a team and as a tribute to the leading role Land Rovers have served over time, and why many pursue such ventures in life and business.”

Terry Brand MD of AutObarn SA, told The Corner: “AutObarn will manage all automotive sponsorships fot the event – along with Sabat, Castrol, Fragram, Wynn’s, and Philips Automotive Lights and we are also looking at assisting the Breast Cancer Association.

“It will be an opportunity and great promotion for our brands – an exciting programme combining several social responsibilities and activities en route. The team is already looking at similar events and missions.”
